The Complete Buffet Manual or How to Mix Fancy Drinks by J. E. Sheridan (1901, p.98)
| 3 dashes | lemon juice | acid |
| 1 wine-glass | Santa Cruz rum | base |
| 1 large teaspoonful | sugar — powdered white sugar | base |
| berries — berries in season | garnish | |
| Orange — Orange garnish. | garnish |
- Shake the sugar, a little charged water, lemon juice, rum, and shaved ice well.
- Strain into a claret wine glass, ornament with orange and berries in season, and serve.
Garnish: Orange and berries in season.
Ice: Shaved ice
This is a useful turn-of-the-century checkpoint for the Santa Cruz rum branch of the sour family proper.
Sheridan still expects a dressed, decorative service even in a relatively lean sour structure.
