  1. Put the crushed cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg into the rum and let the mixture stand for an hour.
  2. Strain with pressure and add an equal quantity of lime-juice.
  3. Lengthen with the bottled ale and serve.

The comic alias suggests it was remembered as a punishingly strong or rough restorative rather than a genteel cup.

This is essentially a spiced rum-and-lime concentrate thrown into ale at service.
