Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks by William Terrington (1869, p.198) — Terrington 1869

1 wine-glassdry sherry or Madeira base
Boker's or Angostura bitters — A dash.bitter
  1. Add a dash of Boker's or Angostura bitters to the wine-glass of dry sherry or Madeira and serve.

This is a useful bridge between fortified-wine service and the growing bitters culture of the cocktail era.

The entire formula is really about measured seasoning rather than mixing.
