Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks by William Terrington (1869, p.202) — Terrington 1869

1 piecebread crust — crust of breadbase
water — boiling waterdilution
  1. Toast the crust of bread gradually to a chocolate brown.
  2. Add the toast to a jug of boiling water.
  3. When cold, strain and serve.

This is a classic domestic restorative surviving within a much broader drinks manual.

Its value is mainly documentary, showing the breadth of Terrington's beverage scope.

Terrington remarks that it is much preferable to put the toast to the water.
