Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks by William Terrington (1869, p.176) — Terrington 1869
| 1 glass | English gin or Scotch whisky | base |
| 1 bottle | sparkling hock | base |
| 1 pint | ice — shaven ice | other |
| 1 sprig | mint — fresh mint | other |
- Macerate the mint in the spirit until well flavored, then strain.
- Add the spirit to the sparkling hock with the shaven ice, stir up, and serve.
Garnish: Mint if desired.
Ice: Shaven ice
This is a particularly vivid crossover between the Rhine cup line and American mint-spirit service.
The mint is carried by the spirit first rather than directly by the wine.
