Cocktail Boothby's American Bar-Tender by Wm. T. Boothby (1891, p.20)

1 ponyOld Tom gin base
2 dashAromatic bitters — bittersbitter
1 teaspoongum syrup sweetener
  1. Stir with ice.
  2. Strain into a cocktail glass.

This is useful because it preserves the still-live sweet Old Tom aromatic branch beside the newer vermouth-driven drinks.

The drink remains in the older sugar-and-bitters cocktail grammar.
