Cocktail Boothby's American Bar-Tender by Wm. T. Boothby (1891, p.30) — Hot
| 1 piece | lemon peel | acid |
| Scotch whisky — Scotch whiskey | base | |
| water — boiling water | dilution | |
| 1 clove | Clove | other |
| 1 cube | sugar | sweetener |
- Dissolve the sugar in a hot-water glass three-quarters full of boiling water.
- Add Scotch whisky to nearly fill, throw in the lemon peel and clove, grate nutmeg, and serve.
Garnish: Lemon peel, clove, and grated nutmeg
This is a good example of plain hot whisky service surviving as its own category beside named punches and toddies.
The drink is defined by the flavored hot-water base and in-glass spice handling rather than by punch-scale mixing.
