Mixed Drinks by Herbert W. Green (1895, p.66)

1 piecelemon peel — twisted lemon peelacid
1 large spoonfulsimple syrup — syrupbase
1 jiggerWhiskey — whiskybase
  1. Fill a mixing glass two-thirds full of fine ice and add the syrup, lemon peel, and whisky.
  2. Stir, strain into a previously cooled cocktail glass, add nutmeg, and serve with ice water on the side.

Garnish: Nutmeg.

Ice: Fine ice

This is a useful checkpoint because it preserves a fully chilled, strained toddy distinct from both hot and muddled versions.

The side water and strained cocktail-glass service are part of the intended form.

The finish is mellow, slightly spiced, and citrus-touched.
Summary
A modernised toddy that shows older family structures surviving inside more refined bar service.

Strained Toddy is useful because it preserves the toddy's sugar-spirit-water grammar while transforming its service. That is exactly the kind of evolutionary shift this project aims to document.

The muddled lemon and strained cold service are the key changes from older toddy habits. Nutmeg keeps a clear link to older warm-drink presentation.

Compared with Thomas's toddies, this is cleaner, colder, and more glass-conscious. The old structure survives, but the mode of drinking has changed.

This is historically interesting because the toddy logic is preserved, but the drink is treated with late-century cold shaking/stirring and strained service rather than plain hot mug service.
